What types of wheel hubs are there?

Wheel hubs are essential components that keep wheels rotating smoothly and safely. They connect the wheel to the axle, support the braking system, and often house bearings or sensors. Choosing the right type of hub is crucial for vehicle performance, durability, and safety. In this blog, we explain the main types of wheel hubs, their features, and where they are typically used.

1. Separate wheel hubs

  • Description: A standalone hub with a separate bearing, requiring regular maintenance like greasing and adjusting.
  • Application: Found in older vehicles where flexibility and maintenance access are important.

2. Integrated hub-bearing units

  • Description: A fully integrated hub and bearing assembly, sealed and preloaded for maintenance-free use.
  • Application: Common in modern vehicles for ease and reliability.

3. Wheel Hubs with integrated abs sensors

  • Description: Equipped with sensors that monitor wheel rotation and feed data to the ABS system for improved braking and stability.
  • Application: Standard in vehicles with ABS and advanced driver-assistance systems.

4. Hubs for disc and drum brake systems

  • Description: Specifically designed for either disc or drum brake systems. Supports the brake disc or drum.
  • Application: Depends on the vehicle's braking system configuration.

5. Driven and non-driven wheel hubs

  • Description: Driven hubs connect to the drivetrain and transfer torque to the wheels; non-driven hubs support the wheel without moving it.
  • Application: Driven hubs are found on powered axles; non-driven hubs are on free-rolling axles.
