What are FMVSS 106 and SAE J1401 standards?

When you’re supplying brake hoses, quality and compliance aren’t optional. FMVSS 106 and SAE J1401 are the two key standards that signal a safe, reliable product. At Kavo Parts, all our brake hoses meet both. That means fewer questions, fewer returns, and more confidence for you and your customers.

Here’s what the standards mean:

FMVSS 106 – Safety standard

FMVSS 106 sets the safety and performance requirements for brake hoses.
It ensures a hose performs under pressure and over time.

A hose must pass tests for:

  • Burst and tensile strength
  • Whip resistance
  • Brake fluid compatibility
  • Labeling and traceability

✅ Why it matters:
You avoid quality issues, warranty claims, and reputation damage. FMVSS 106 compliance shows your product meets essential safety criteria.

SAE J1401 – Performance standard

SAE J1401 is a widely used industry standard for hydraulic brake hoses.
It’s more demanding than FMVSS 106 and focuses on consistent, on performance.
A hose must be tested on:

  • Cold and heat resistance
  • Expansion control under pressure
  • Ozone and chemical resistance
  • Fitting corrosion and pull-off strength
  • Brake pressure cycling

✅ Why it matters:
It gives you a stronger quality story. J1401 helps reduce returns and builds trust with workshops and retailers.
