How to identify high-quality timing belts before choosing a supplier.

As a distributor, you want to be sure about quality before you commit to a new supplier. When evaluating timing belts, these are the key points to discuss with your supplier and verify where possible.

1. Supplier certifications and experience

Identify important certifications, such as ISO 9001 certification, which confirms controlled and consistent production processes.

Another aspect is experience. A new supplier has not yet proven itself in the market. A supplier with more experience and a proven track record in the aftermarket reduces risk.

2. Material quality and durability

Rubber compound: The rubber compound of the timing belt must be developed to withstand high temperatures, engine fluids, and long service intervals without hardening or cracking.

Wear and ageing resistance: Timing belts must maintain flexibility and performance during long-term use, high-speed rotation, and exposure to oil and heat.

3. Production and testing standards

Quality control: Reliable manufacturers apply strict quality control, monitoring and testing every stage of production, from incoming raw materials, during assembly, to the finished product. All to ensure they meet OE standards.

Dimensional accuracy: Precise tooth profiles and consistent dimensions are essential to prevent premature wear and timing issues.

Testing Belts: should be tested to meet OEM performance requirements, not just visually inspected. Key technical metrics include tensile strength, elongation, tooth dimensions, pitch length, and adhesion strength.

4. Product performance essentials

Anti-ageing performance: The belt keeps its strength and flexibility over time, without performance loss.

Oil and fluid resistance: Resistance to engine oils and fluids prevents swelling, degradation, and early failure.

Wear resistance: Durable materials and accurate tooth profiles reduce friction and limit tooth damage.

Tensile strength: Strong reinforcement prevents stretching, slipping, and timing deviation.

5. Samples

A simple way to check if a supplier trusts their product is if they offer samples, so you can check the flexibility, elasticity, and fabric structure yourself before committing.
